Our Projects
Listed below are just a few of the ongoing projects Altrusa of
Ocala work on throughout the year.

THE READ-IN
In 1990 Altrusa's Literacy Committee created and
initiated the first Read-In during September each year.
One half hour is set aside by each Elementary School in Marion County
on the same day to encourage reading to children.  Altrusa recruits over
900 volunteers to read to nearly 19,000 school children.  The goal of this
outstanding program is to promote the importance of reading.
EYES TO SEE FOR LITERACY
This program, started in 1991, locates needy children
through community referrals, and gives them an
opportunity to obtain prescription glasses.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Each spring, funds are distributed in the form of college
scholarships.  They are awarded to both high school graduates and
persons re-entering the work force.  Financial need and past
performance are among the most important criteria in determining
their award.  Altrusa of Ocala also has a fully endowed scholarship
fund at the Central Florida Community College.
READING ROOMS
Hundreds of children's books are collected and donated
each year to the many children's reading rooms
throughout Marion County.
FOOD 4 KIDS
Thanks to Interfaith Services of Ocala we became aware of
children in our community without sufficient food at home.
Non-perishable food and wheeled backpacks were donated to
facilitate the children taking food home for the weekend.
Come and join us!
Feel the joy of
giving to others!
